Baja Ha-Ha XXXI

THE GRAND POOBAH IS DELIGHTED TO REPORT THAT
62 PAID ENTRIES SIGNED UP FOR BAJA HA-HA XXXI
IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS

For reference, that's one more than in the first 24 hours last year, when there were ultimately 131 entries. And seven more than two years ago when there were also 131 entries.

As of May 14 the entries had swelled to 68. These numbers don't include the Assistant Poobah's Gulfstar 50 Talion or the 63-ft cat Profligate that will be the mothership for the 28th time. So the fleet would currently be 70.

If history is to be a guide, the Poobah expects there will again be about 130 paid entries.

So far the smallest boat entered is Odina, a classic Cal 29-2 that will be sailed by
John Walsh and Liz Newkirk of Mendocino.

The longest yacht entered is Nick Green and Franziska Moritz's England-based Hylas 63 Malilia.

So far five multihulls have entered, the largest being Santiago Becerra's high-performance Chris White-designed Atlantic 57 Espiritu Santo.

In addition, three powerboats have signed up.

Both the Poobah and Assistant Poobah are currently traveling, so we haven't dug deep enough into the entries to find out how many 'kid boats' are signed up.

Odd Ha-Ha Factoid: Assistant Poobah reports that the greatest number of Ha-Ha entries has been during recessions. There were over 200 entries after the financial crisis of 2008, and again during the Covid recession.

People again keep asking if this really will be the last Ha-Ha. The answer is yes. Like Jim Morrison sang, 'this is the end'. I wish it wasn't, but it is.

The beach party at Turtle Bay is a natural gem. There will be beer, music, food, dancing, playing in the surf, tug 'o war, and just plain socializing.

Fast-paced Ha-Ha style Bazeball is a big part of the R&R stop at Turtle Bay. Women and children are always 'safe'. For safety's sake, batters must be at least two years of age.

Rainbows are just one of the natural phenomenons often seen on the Ha-Ha.
Green flashes are another.

Shortly after the start of the second leg from Turtle Bay,
a hundred spinnakers blossom with the Baja mountains as the spectacular backdrop.
